HAPPENINGS

JUNE 24TH

From Survivor to Thriver: A Celebration of Resilience

Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster will virtually welcome former Pittsburgh Steeler William Gay to Lancaster to discuss how domestic violence has affected his life. During the virtual fundraising event, From Survivor to Thriver: A Celebration of Resilience, guests will learn how Mr. Gay’s life changed as a result of a horrific act of violence against his mother he had to face at the age of only 8. In addition to the conversation with Mr. Gay, virtual guests will hear from local survivors of domestic violence and learn how DVS has adapted and continued to provide essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic. A deserving individual or organization will also be presented with the Catalyst for Change Award. Support this critical work in our community that too often exists only in shadows.

JUNE 24TH, 25TH & 26TH

The Boys in the Band

There are still a few more opportunities to go see The Boys in the Band live and in person at Ephrata Performing Arts Center.  Winner of the 2019 Tony Award for Best Revival Of A Play, The Boys in the Band shocked the mainstream theater audience in 1968 by presenting a group of gay men unapologetically. Over time Mart Crowley’s revolutionary play has ripened into a scathing comedy of manners about how a marginalized group of people deals with their marginalization both as individuals and as a group. The show runs through the 26th and features a phenomenal cast of local talent, get your tickets today!

The event will still look a little different this year but will be a great night of family friendly fun and food nonetheless. Taking place throughout Lancaster City and throughout the afternoon. Here’s what you can look forward to: mobile performances with musicians on trucks bringing live music to every neighborhood, food trucks in different areas of the city for residents to enjoy, and to end the night there will be a fireworks display at various locations at dusk that residents can view from multiple points of Lancaster City.

YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT: Lancaster LGBTQ+ Coalition

The Lancaster LGBTQ+ Coaltion‘s mission is to build supportive and enriching opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex and Asexual individuals, along with others who identify with the LGBTQ+ community. They believe in highlighting and advocating for issues of intersectionality, diversity, and the more vulnerable subsets of our population and were established to provide services and advocate for the rights of the Lancaster County LGBTQ+ community. While you are visiting their website be sure to check out their HEART program as well. Currently there are no fully affirming shelters in Lancaster County and bed availability is scarce. This past February, the HEART Program opened its first low-cost housing location, including space for Covid-related seasonal emergency housing. It is a 6-month program to offer individuals who are sheltering in unaffirming environments a chance to live in a supportive home and plan their next steps. Consider a sponsorship to help give  community members the homes that they deserve.
